Rs 10 cr tax evasion detected during GST searches

    HYDERABAD: Searches by director general of Goods and Services Tax sleuths along with CGST officials to collect service tax and central excise of pre-GST regime on Tollywood celebrities, private companies and individuals continued on Monday too. Officials searched 23 locations across the city and detected Rs 10 crore tax evasion.

    Sources in GST said film director and writer Vakkantham Vamsi and Haarika and Hassine Creations were among the Tollywood individuals and companies searched.

    Vamsi is director of ‘Naa Peru Surya Naa Illu India’ starring Allu Arjun. He had written scripts for more than 15 Telugu films.

    Haarika & Hassine Creations is a Tollywood film production house headed by S Radha Krishna and has produced films such as ‘Ala Vaikuntapuramlo’ starring Allu Arjun and other films like ‘Aravinda Sametha’ and ‘Shailajareddy Alludu’.

    Recently, income-tax department has also conducted searches on Haarika and Hassine Creations. GST sleuths also searched Trinity Beverages Private Limited, a beer manufacturing unit, in Sangareddy district. The case on Trinity Beverages is about defaulting on central excise. Several realtors were also searched over non-payment of service tax of pre GST period. Builders, steel traders and financial consultants were also found evading service tax.

    A GST official told TOI, “We found most of the entities and individuals have changed their address of the principal place of business. Without informing the authorities, they have changed the address. It took a lot of time for us to reach the current address. Changing the principal place of business without informing is a violation and a fine of Rs 25,000 can be imposed on them.”

    Goods and service tax officials have asked the erring taxpayers to voluntarily disclose their service tax liability under Sabka Viswas scheme where legacy taxes can be disclosed.
